Dear Parents and Students,

        As we continue remote learning for students in the home in response to the CoVid pandemic,  PS 131 offers this guide to all parents and students to provide you with a resource you can refer to when you need some assistance.  The guide provides easy instructions (including links to videos and DOE webpages) that will help you to troubleshoot some of the issues that you may encounter.   Should you still need assistance, please refer to the PS 131 Resource Guide for Family Support which includes information on who you can contact for help.  New information will continue to be added to this remote learning guide, so please check back often to see what has been added.

#1. iPad Distribution By The DOE

To keep students connected and able to learn from home, the DOE is lending 300,000 internet-enabled iPads to students. Families that want to request a device should fill out the Remote Learning Device Request form, below. Teachers and school staff should use this same form to request devices on behalf of their students. There is no deadline for this request, please fill out the form today to get a device for your child. 

Please note that the DOE will never ask for any payment in response to this request.

             Priority will be given to students most in need. 

  • All devices are granted on a temporary basis and will later need to be returned. 
  • There is a limit of one device per student.  
  • You must fill out a separate form for each student who needs a device.  
  • Make sure you agree to the Terms of Use in the request form.  
  • There is no need to call the DOE or 311 to check on the status of your device. We are getting the devices out as fast as we can and are following processes to make sure our highest need families get them first. 

 

Student Device Loan Agreement 

Before we can loan the iPad, the family must complete the Student Device Loan Agreement.  By accepting the agreement and using the device, families agree that the device is the property of the NYCDOE, and it must be returned when on-site learning resumes.

#2. Getting Started With Your iPad

 

 How to Set Up Internet Access on Your Personal iPad or a School iPad 


         If you have a personal iPad or received a school iPad in March, you first need to add your home Wifi information to gain internet access: 

  1. Click on the Settings icon 
  2. Click on Wifi on the left side column 
  3. Select your home wifi network in the right column 
  4. Enter the password 
  5. You will see a check next to your Wifi network once it connects. 
  6. Click on the home button to return to the main screen. 

School iPad Apps
All distributed school iPads are managed by the PS 131 Managed Network.  Each iPad has several educational apps already installed. These include:  BrainPOP,  BrainPop, Jr., BrainPOP ELL, IXL, Kids A-Z, Class Dojo, Google Classroom, Meet, MYON,  Zoom iCloud, and Epic!.  
You are not permitted to download and install additional apps with a personal Apple ID.  To begin using the app, click on the app you wish to use and type in your login information.  

Your Personal iPad Apps: 
You need to use your personal Apple ID in order to download and install apps on your personal iPad.  After making sure your WIFI is connected, click on the App Store icon and search for each of the apps listed above. Click on GET and open the app when it has been installed.  Your child will be using these apps for class lessons with their teacher. 

Distributed DOE iPads: 
Your iPad will come connected to the internet—you will not need a WiFi connection or hotspot device. The internet connection is provided by T-Mobile, at no cost to you. The apps are pre-installed. Once you receive your iPad, you will be able to visit websites and do classwork immediately.

#3. Activating Your DOE Student Account

 

  

To keep students connected and meeting academic requirements when learning remotely, the DOE has created student accounts for every single New York City public school student, including 3K and Pre-K students.  The account gives your student access to Google Classroom, Zoom and Microsoft Office 365 apps, through the Remote Learning Portal.

How Do I Activate My Child’s DOE Student Account? 

          Follow these step by step instructions: 

  1.   Launch your internet browser. (Google Chrome preferred but not necessary)
  2. Click on  this address link:   https://idm.nycenet.edu/students/start.form 
  3. Type in the student’s OSIS number and birthdate   Press Continue
  4. Write down your DOE username below.
  5. Create a password that you will remember.  Write it down below! 

        My child’s DOE Username is _________________________. 

        My child’s password is ______________________________. 

        My child’s DOE Student account is   MyUsername@nyc.students.net 

        ________________________________________________________

 Easily stay connected with your child’s classes on ClassDojo. You can see all of your child’s feedback from teachers, hear important announcements and updates, and see photos and videos from class! You’ll also be able to see your child’s classwork on their own Student Story.

To set up a student account, ask your child’s teacher for their student code 
Download the ClassDojo app or go to student.classdojo.com 
Click “Sign Up” and select “Student”  
Enter Student Code and click “Check code” 
Create username, password, select age, and enter parent email address

Students can add to their ClassDojo Portfolio by logging into their ClassDojo student account on an iOS/Android device, or on a Chromebook, laptop or a desktop computer.  Students can log into their ClassDojo student account by going to dojo.me and selecting the login option the teacher has chosen for the class. 
Once inside their student account, students can upload photos, videos, drawings, or journal entries. They can also upload Microsoft Office files, PDFs, and image files.

#5. Remote Learning Platform:  Google Classroom

 

          

            Please follow the instructions below to join your Google Classroom  
            for the first timusing your nycstudents.net login. 

  1.  Sign into the remote learning portal:  http://tinyurl.com/remoteportal  
      with your username and password.   Press Continue 
  2. If correct, you will reach the NYC DOE  App Center 
  3. Click on #2 Google Classroom 
  4.  Verify your nycstudents.net Google account.  Press Continue 
  5.  Accept the Terms of Service. 
  6.  Select Continue on the green Google Classroom page 
  7.  Pick your role:  Click  on  “I am a Student”. 
  8.  Click on the  +  sign in the upper right corner and select Join a Class 
  9. Type in the Class Code your teacher has given you in your Dojo Class Story. 
  10. Click on Join.     You are now part of youGoogle Classroom! 

        Please follow the instructions below to join your Google Classroom using an iPad

         1.   Open the Google Classroom app
         2.   Type in your Google email address:    username@nycstudents.net
         3.   Sign in to the Remote Portal with your Username and Password
         4.    Continue with steps above if the first time joining your classroom 
         5.   T+You are now part of your Google Classroom!

Instructions for a Laptop or Desktop Computer

Steps to Follow: 

  1. Open up your internet browser (Preferably Google Chrome) 
  2. Type in this web address:  tinyurl.com/remoteportal 
  3. Click on the blue Remote Learning Portal button 
  4. Sign in to the portal with your DOE username and password 
  5. Click on # 2. Google Classroom to launch the App 
  6. Verify your DOE student Google account 
  7. Your Class should now be visible. 
  8. Wait for your teacher to post the Meet link at the time of the meeting. 
  9. Click the Meet Link just below your Class Name to join the meeting. 

              Instructions For Joining  a Google Meet on An iPad Using the Google Meet App

                 Steps to Follow:
         1.   If installed, click on the Google Meet App.   (If not installed, download and install the Google Meet app.)
         2.   Welcome to Meet  opens -  Click Continue
         3.   Click OK to allow Meet to access your Camera and Microphone
         4.   Click on Sign In
         5.   Google Account  - Type in your DOE student email address   (username@nycstudents.net).  Click Next
         6.   NYC DOE Sign In Page  opens - type in your Username and Password
         7.   Using Meet opens up - Click on
Got it 
         8.   Click on Enter a Meeting Code
         9.   Meeting Code:   Type in only the last 10 letters of the Meeting Link posted on your Google Classroom.    
                Example:    abc-defg-hij    
        10.  You will now join your meeting.

#7. How To Join Your Class in a Zoom Meeting

   

A Quick and Easy Way to Join Your Teacher and Class in a Zoom Meeting 
                    (Instructions For a Laptop or Desktop Computer)

1.       Open up your internet browser (Preferably Google Chrome)

3.       Click on the blue Remote Learning Portal button 
4.       Sign in to the portal with your DOE username and password 
5.       Click on the Zoom icon 
6.       You should arrive at your DOE Zoom profile page 
7.       Click on Join A Meeting in the top right corner 
8.       Type in the Meeting ID that your teacher posted in Class Story and click Join 
           Wait for your teacher to allow you into the meeting. Enjoy your meeting!

2.     Open the app by clicking on the Zoom icon
3.     You should be on the Start A Meeting Page
4.     Click on Sign In at the bottom of the page

6.     Type in nycdoe and click Go 
7.     Click on Open and  then type in the Meeting ID 
8.     Click Join

How to Open a Parent NYC Schools Account

What is a Parent NYC Schools Account?

Did you know that you can track your child’s education on any computer, phone, or tablet? The NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) is an app that lets you see your student’s grades, attendance, fitness results, schedule, and more from anywhere and in all DOE languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu. 

Dear Parents,

We invite you to register for an NYC Schools account, which provides you a new way of accessing key information about your child’s progress. With your NYC Schools account, you will be able to view your child's information in one of ten languages on a computer, phone or tablet.  For more information about the Parent Schools Account, visit: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learning/in-our-classrooms/nyc-schools-account

You can register for your account from any computer or internet-connected device by following these steps:

1. Visit https://mystudent.nyc and select the “Create Account” link found on the login page.
2. Enter your child’s 9-digit student OSIS ID number. You can find your child’s OSIS ID number on his or her report card.
3. Enter the unique Account Creation Code, which is specific to you and your child.
To request your Account Creation Code:   Email the Parent Coordinator: Ms. L. Boccasino at  Lboccasino@schools.nyc.gov
4. Select “Next.”
5. Enter and confirm your email address and password.
6.   Select “Create Account.” If you have more than one child attending an NYC public school, you will receive a letter containing an Account Creation Code for each child. You will only need to enter the student OSIS # and Account Creation Code for one of your children in steps 2 and 3 above to create your account. Once you create your Parent account, you can add your remaining children by entering their student OSIS # and Account Creation Codes on the “Manage My Account” page. 
7.   Each Account Creation Code is unique to you and your child and should not be shared with others.
