Music Special Programs
This year we were chosen as the recipient of free in-school programming for our fifth graders from The Metropolitan Opera Guild. The Guild, with a $2,000 grant from The Joseph & Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation, will cover the cost of six in-school workshops with a teaching artist from the Guild. The culmination of the program is a fifth grade trip to see a dress rehearsal performance at The Metropolitan Opera.
Another program which is enriching the musical lives of our students this year is a partnership with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Our school has worked with the Conservatory in some capacity for over 20 years. One component of this program is a Music Therapy program during which the visiting teaching artist works with our special needs students once a week in small group settings. On a larger scale, the Conservatory will, as a result of CASA grants, be sponsoring an after-school band program. This program will allow several upper grade-level students to learn to play an instrument and participate in a once-a-week band program, running from December thru May.
PS 131 also has a Glee Club, led by music teacher, Ms. Caroline MCCrossan, and a Bucket Drumming Band, led by Grade 4 teachers, Ms. Christine DiBlasi and Ms. Emily Sanderson. These clubs meet regularly during early mornings, lunchtime and after school to prepare their beautiful performances.
