Parental Involvement

Parental Communication and Support

Operoo
To build strong communication within our school community, we utilize the Operoo online communication platform to send important messages to our families regarding school-wide events and school information. Our school messages are sent straight to your phone or email. We also use Operoo to store important information digitally such as blue emergency cards. Please ask your child’s teacher or visit our welcome center on how we can sign you up for an Operoo account at the beginning of the year to ensure you receive all the important information given from our school.

P.S. 131 Welcome Center
To best support our families, we have created a P.S. 131 Welcome Center to provide you with assistance with any issues, concerns, or questions you may have. Our Welcome Center will be located by the 44th street cafeteria doors at 7:45-8:30am and 2:30-3:00pm.

NYCSA (New York City Student Accounts)
New York City Schools Account (https://mystudent.nyc/) is an online tool that helps you get the information you need about your child’s academic progress. In NYC Schools Account, you can view detailed information about your child, including information about attendance, course grades, and scores on state tests.  In order to get started with NYC Schools Account and view your child’s information, you will need your child’s student ID and a temporary password. Contact the Family Support Team or the Parent Coordinator for more information.

Language Assistance
The NYC Department of Education provides translation and interpretation services ![new window icon][1]. that will assist you in communicating effectively with your child's school.  If you require interpretation services when meeting with your child's teacher, please notify our Language Access Coordinator, Ass’t. Principal,  Ms. Meghan Avelluto.  The school can provide interpretation service in person in the following languages: Spanish, Chinese, Russian and Urdu.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
One of the greatest strengths of PS 131 is the collaboration among teachers, administrators and families through the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA office is located in the cafe. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) works to support teachers and families, and it serves as a liaison between families and the school administration. The PTA provides tools and information to help families become active participants in their child's education and the PS 131 community.  At P.S.131, every parent or guardian is a member of the PTA.  PTA Meetings are held monthly and are open to all members of the community. PTA Executive Board meetings are also held monthly and are open to all.

Parent Engagement Time

WHEN CAN PARENTS MEET WITH TEACHERS?

Meetings with Teachers

In addition to our Parent Teacher Conferences, parents can request to make an appointment to meet with their child's teacher through email or at the Welcome Center.  The parent and teacher can agree on a date and time to meet.  Teachers will not be able to enter conversations with parents at dismissal or arrival time in order to ensure safety.

Meetings with teachers can be arranged by:

  1. Sending a written message to the teacher via your child
  2. Calling the school and leaving a message for the teacher
  3. Email the school at 15k131@schools.nyc.gov
  4.  Visiting our P.S. 131 Welcome Center located by the 44th street cafeteria doors
at 7:45-8:30 am and 2:30-3:00 pm.
