The RULER Program

This year at P.S. 131, we have implemented a school-wide Social-Emotional Learning Program called RULER. The acronym RULER stands for the following five skills:

Recognizing emotions in oneself and others
Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions
Labeling emotions with a nuanced vocabulary
Expressing emotions in accordance with cultural norms and social context
Regulating emotions with helpful strategies

The RULER program emphasizes the importance and value of emotions in our everyday lives and helps to build our emotional intelligence.  Every classroom at P.S. 131 is utilizing the RULER tool called the Mood Meter. The Mood Meter enhances self and social awareness and supports the development of emotion vocabulary, leading to discussion about the range of strategies for regulating emotions. The Mood Meter is helping both students and staff become more mindful of how their emotions change throughout the day and how their emotions in turn affect their actions.
